Each season brings a distinct purpose and essence, yet spring, with its showy exhibition of nature's grandeur, holds a particularly captivating allure. Throughout the winter months, Mother Nature quietly harbors her energy, retreating inward and storing her reserves beneath the surface, patiently resting and awaiting the moment of her reawakening. As spring unfolds its wings, we bear witness to the magnificent release of this pent-up energy. It's a season of rebirth and rejuvenation, where the very essence of creation seems to dance before our eyes. New life emerges everywhere, from the tender shoots sprouting from the soil cushioning the delicate first steps of hatchlings to the breathtaking bursts of color that break through the monochrome landscape of winter.

During this time of renewal, we find ourselves drawn to the profound inspiration offered by nature's unfolding spectacle. Spring becomes a metaphor for our growth and expansion, a call to emerge from our winter cocoon and stretch towards the sun. Just as the natural world has shed the old to make space for the new, we too are compelled to embark on our journey of shedding and renewal. The age-old adage "out with the old, in with the new" takes on new significance as we embark on the ritual of spring cleaning. Beyond the mundane tasks of decluttering and dusting lies a deeper symbolic meaning—a gesture of clearing away remnants of the past to make room for growth, expansion, and ultimately, the realization of our deepest desires.

Spring brings forth a multitude of festivals dedicated to celebrating its arrival. Among them is the Gaelic festival of Imbolc, observed on the first of February.


As Imbolc approaches, we find ourselves still entrenched in the depths of winter. This ancient Gaelic festival marks the midpoint between Mid-Winter and the Spring Equinox, symbolizing a glimmer of hope amidst the cold. Imbolc, meaning "in the belly of the Mother" in Gaelic, recognizes that although the Earth is still shrouded in winter's grasp, it carries the promise of new life, like a mother pregnant with her unborn offspring. Imbolc is also synonymous with St. Brigid's Day, celebrating the anticipation of spring's return. While the chill of winter persists, there is a noticeable shift as the days grow longer and the sun's warmth begins to penetrate the earth's surface, stirring life from its slumber.


Ostara, the Pagan celebration marks the arrival of the Spring equinox. Ostara pays homage to this transition from winter to spring. Named after the Pagan goddess Ostara, who presides over the awakening of plants and the fertility of the earth, this festival rejoices in the resurgence of light. Interestingly, our modern Easter holiday, rooted in Christianity, echoes the themes of this ancient nature-centric observance. Embrace the spirit of Ostara/ Easter by engaging in outdoor activities with loved ones—host a barbecue, embark on a traditional egg hunt, or revel in the joy of planting new life in the earth.

Ultimately, it boils down to two key elements: cleansing and creativity. Having spent the winter months in introspection, gathering our inner strength now is the time to release and grow. If you're struggling to get started, consider a little self-bribery. Treat yourself to something special as a reward for your efforts—a new plant, a fresh set of clothes, or simply the revitalized energy of your newly organized space. After all, every small step towards a cleaner, more harmonious environment is a reward in itself.

Spring Cleaning

We're all familiar with the routine of keeping our homes tidy, but spring cleaning transcends the ordinary. Yes, clean your windows. My personal favorite method involves a mixture of vinegar and essential oils, applied with a simple yet effective technique of buffing with newspaper. This practice has become somewhat of a ritual for me, infusing my space with a sense of freshness and vitality. When it comes to choosing essential oils for this task, grapefruit reigns supreme as my go-to scent for welcoming the spring season. Its bright, cheerful aroma embodies the essence of rejuvenation and new beginnings. However, if grapefruit isn't your cup of tea, consider other citrus oils like lemongrass, litsea cubeba, lemon balm, or bergamot—they're like liquid sunshine in a bottle. Alternatively, springtime florals such as lavender, ho wood, and geranium can also breathe new life into your space. Remember, it's not just the interior of your home that deserves attention—don't overlook the exterior as well.

SpendTime Outside: Spring Cleaning, Yard Edition

Your outdoor plant companions have weathered the storm—quite literally—with freezing temperatures, relentless rain, fierce winds, and perhaps a touch of neglect (at least in my yard). But as the sun begins to peek through the clouds, it's time for us to emerge into our yards once more. Excitement fills the air as life returns after months of dormancy, signaling the onset of spring and a flurry of yard work awaiting our attention.

First and foremost, let's tackle the task of cleaning. Yes, more cleaning. Clear out all the remnants of winter—dead plants, fallen leaves, and unruly grass—from your beds. Grab a rake and bid farewell to the debris cluttering your garden spaces. Next, inspect your plants for any signs of cold or ice damage. Give them a good prune, removing any dead or damaged areas to redirect their energy towards new growth. Make sure to wait until the last threat of frost before you prune. Don't let this yard waste go to waste—toss it onto your compost pile, where it will contribute to the nutrient-rich soil your plants crave.

Once the old has been cleared away, it's time to usher in the new. Take a moment to assess the quality of your soil and make any necessary amendments—compost, peat moss, sand, or pine fronds—to ensure optimal growing conditions. In clay-heavy soils like those found in Houston, a well-balanced mix of compost, soil, and sand can work wonders. Customize your amendments based on the specific needs of your plants, organizing them according to their preferences for moisture and nutrients. Set your plant friends up for success. Happy plants make for a happy gardener!

Don't forget to give your hardscaping elements some love too. Check on your walls, fences, benches, sheds, trellises, and pathways—winter weather can take its toll on wood and concrete alike, causing shifts and cracks that may need attention.

Now, onto the enjoyable part: tending to your perennials and planning for new growth. Divide and replant any overcrowded perennials to give them room to thrive. With your freshly cleaned space, consider what you'd like to cultivate this season. Head to the plant store and welcome some new additions to your garden family. While I typically focus on medicinal and culinary herbs, this year I'm thinking of adding some purely ornamental plants for their beauty.

And for those without a yard, fear not—there are plenty of plants that thrive indoors too. Not only will they bring the spirit of spring into your home, but they'll also improve indoor air quality and reduce stress. Even for those who claim to have a "black thumb," there's a plant out there for everyone. Take it from me—I have a snake plant in my living room that I haven't watered in over a month. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or a novice, there's bound to be a plant that suits your preferences and abilities. So get out there, soak up the sunshine, and let the joy of gardening awaken your spirit this spring!

Consider incorporating sauna sessions into your routine for a detoxifying sweat. Another effective method for improving circulation and detoxification is dry brushing—a personal favorite of mine. Let your creativity flourish by experimenting with your diet this spring. If you've been feeling a bit off, consider trying an elimination diet to identify any food sensitivities or triggers. Additionally, spring is an opportune moment to embark on a gentle detox—no need for extreme fasting experiences. Simply focus on consuming a clean, whole foods-based diet. You can even incorporate dandelion tea into your routine for added detoxification support.

I've been exploring intermittent fasting and have experienced positive results. Starting with a gentle 12:12 fast and gradually extending to 14:10, I've noticed significant improvements in my sleep quality by avoiding late-night eating. When I fall off of this routine (and I always do) I really notice the difference.

Another way to invigorate your springtime diet is by increasing your intake of raw foods. While some advocate for a strictly raw food diet, I view it more as a short-term detox rather than a long-term dietary plan due to the potential nutrient deficiencies. However, incorporating more raw foods into your daily meals can be incredibly beneficial. Spring offers an abundance of seasonal produce to choose from, making it the perfect time to embrace a raw food-focused approach. As always, it's important to consult with your healthcare provider before making any significant dietary changes.

Seasonal Diet

Embracing seasonal eating is a wonderful way to reconnect with both yourself and nature, and spring offers a plethora of fresh, vibrant options. During this time, the focus is on cleansing and rejuvenation, with a diet abundant in green foods, citrus fruits, and vegetables. Lettuce, broccoli, mangos, strawberries, garlic, carrots, bananas, and mustard greens are also at your disposal, offering a rainbow of flavors and nutrients to enjoy.

Additionally, spring heralds the arrival of fresh herbs, adding depth and complexity to your dishes. Fragrant basil, invigorating peppermint, soothing lemon balm, and aromatic marjoram are among my personal favorites, doubling as delightful additions to herbal teas. Don't overlook the versatility of coriander, cumin, rosemary, oregano, thyme, and sage, which can elevate the flavors of various cuisines. Many herbs are easy to cultivate both indoors and outdoors, enhancing your culinary adventures with their vibrant aromas and flavors. Consider incorporating lemongrass into your repertoire for a fresh, citrusy kick.  While catnip and citronella are not typically consumed, they can help repel pesky mosquitoes, allowing you to fully enjoy your time outdoors.

Eat Your Weeds

Do you want to know what I love most about spring? The weeds! That's right, I have a soft spot for these wild wonders. Edible springtime weeds serve as a poignant reminder of nature's abundant generosity. Take chickweed, for instance—this resilient plant is a familiar face in many yards, offering both ease of digestion and a wealth of nutrients. And let's not forget about dandelion greens, packed with fiber and boasting a bounty of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, folate, vitamin K, vitamin C, calcium, and potassium. Another cherished friend that makes an appearance during this season is lamb's quarters, also known as wild spinach. Other edible springtime weeds worth mentioning include violet, daylily, wintercress, and cleavers.

Now, let's talk foraging. If you're considering foraging for wild edibles, it's absolutely crucial to be 100% confident in your plant identification skills. Some plants have toxic look-alikes, so thorough knowledge is essential for safety. Additionally, ensure that the foraging area is free from contamination—avoid locations near roadways, railroad tracks, or areas treated with pesticides. Once you've confirmed the plant's identity and verified the cleanliness of the area, forage responsibly and sustainably. Never harvest more than the plant can regrow, respecting the delicate balance of nature's bounty.


I See the Light: Spring Cleaning Mental Edition

Spring is all about cleansing, and now let's turn our focus to your mind. It's time to declutter your thoughts and rid yourself of anything weighing you down. Have an overdue library book? Own up to the fine and return it. Feeling drained by toxic relationships? Cut ties and prioritize your well-being. Overwhelmed by negative influences on social media? Unfollow those toxic accounts. Take a moment to reflect on what's holding you back and use the energy of the season to address it head-on. Realistically organize your time and tasks, perhaps with the help of a trusty planner. Commit yourself to tackle one nagging task each day, or break down bigger changes into manageable steps.

I'll admit, that I've mastered the art of dissociation and compartmentalization. But when I finally took stock of all the little irritations in my life and addressed them, I realized how much mental clutter was weighing me down. While none of these issues were individually significant, collectively they were taking a toll. Clearing out this mental clutter created space—space for patience, presence, and pursuing activities that brought me joy. Just like tending to a garden, removing what no longer serves allows room for new growth. Whether it's a major overhaul or a series of small adjustments, decluttering your mind frees up time and energy for the things that truly matter. Now, it's time to embrace the possibilities and discover what you want to cultivate in this newfound space.
